Supporting Your Child’s Early Learning Journey in Preschool

February 3, 2026

Amidst all the frenzied activity of day to day life with a young child, knowing just the best ways to support them in their early education might seem daunting or overwhelming. What are some of the ways we can support and nurture our budding young learners during this special time ofdiscovery and curiosity?

Encourage Independence

From helping with household tasks to bringing us things we may need, children are just naturally eager to try things on their own. And…giving them opportunities to make choices and explore new things helps build confidence. At Ability School, we believe that fostering self determination and independence are essential parts of education. When children are allowed to try new tasks, practice new skills and try to solve problems independently, they grow and begin to take ownership of their education right from the start!

Celebrate achievements and don’t sweat the small stuff…

Building on small achievements like a new skill or task completed independently, new words or letters recognized or a small job well done builds confidence. It also sets a foundation to move onto more challenging tasks. Remember to focus on what the child is doing well and remember not to sweat the small stuff. Build early reading skills with confidence and reading readiness Children are naturally curious and seem to be drawn to words and letters from a very young age. At Ability School, children begin reading as early as age four. Using a supportive and very gradual approach, reading skills are developed and successfully built upon with enthusiasm.

Fostering a love of Books

At Ability School, children are always encouraged to explore and to talk about the stories and books they are interested in. Questioning and evaluating information allows them to interact and get even more out of the material. At home there are many ways to encourage a love of books too! Taking children to libraries and book stores, reading to them, pointing out signs and other written language are all ways to introduce and enhance their skills.

Supporting each child’s individual journey

Every child grows and learns in their own way. It’s important to nurture and celebrate each individual’s interests and curiosities in education. At Ability School a 100% mastery based curriculum allows each child to progress at his own pace while also exploring his/her own interests. After all, what is challenging for one student might be quickly achieved by another. So…rather than allowing children to become frustrated in school, a 100% mastery based curriculum allows each child to progress at their own pace.

The importance of the learning process

Teaching children at a young age is about more than just outcomes, it’s about developing the ability and skills to successfully learn for life. With hands-on experiences, and thoughtful exploration of the world around them, children can use their new found skills to succeed on their unique educational journey right from the start!
